The short version
- On the second night of a back-to-back, players scored +0.38 points above their own season average, more than after any length of rest. 4,046 games by the 366 players with 40 or more games in 2025-26.
- Head to head, 219 of 364 players scored more on second nights than after a rest, and 145 scored less. On 0.82 more minutes. Points a minute: 0.457 on second nights, 0.454 otherwise.
- The tiredness showed up in who played. 20-point scorers played 445 of 575 second nights, 77.4%, against 84.4% of other nights. Pascal Siakam played 5 of 12; LeBron James 7 of 11.
Why this was worth a look
Tired legs on the second night of a back-to-back is one of basketball's oldest lines, and the 2026-27 season tips off on 20 October, US time, the morning of the 21st in Australia. I wanted to see whether a whole season of box scores backed it up.
How it was counted
A back-to-back's second night is a game the day after the team last played, US Eastern dates. The 2025-26 regular season had 1,230 games, and 441 of the 2,460 team-games were second nights. Every player with at least 40 games is compared with that player's own season averageTotal points divided by games played across the whole regular season, so a star and a bench player are each measured against their own normal., so the chart is not just stars against bench players.
The second night scored best, not worst
Second nights came in at +0.38 points against each player's own average. One day's rest came in at −0.03, two days at −0.18 and three or more at −0.14.
Every gap on the chart is under half a point, so the honest reading is that rest made little difference to how many points a player scored, and none in the direction the saying expects. It is the same kind of check the 8-of-10 piece ran on another phrase punters repeat.
Head to head
Each of the 364 players with 5 or more second nights, against the same player's games after a rest: 219 scored more on second nights and 145 scored less. On average +0.42 points, on 0.82 more minutes. A minute on the second night produced as many points as any other, 0.457 against 0.454.
It ran both ways among the stars. Nikola Jokic scored 32.5 a game over 13 second nights, against 26.6 after a rest. Jaylen Brown scored 23.0 over 10, against 29.7.

The chart below counts something else: how often players took the court at all.

| All 366 | Second nights | 5164 | 4046 | 78.4% |
| All 366 | Other nights | 23127 | 18586 | 80.4% |
Players who averaged 20 or more played 445 of their team's 575 second nights, 77.4%, against 2,148 of 2,545 other nights, 84.4%. Across all 366 players the gap was smaller, 78.4% against 80.4%.

When a team's best scorer sits, someone else takes the minutes and the shots, which is part of why everyone else's second nights looked slightly better.
What this doesn't tell you
The box score says who played, not why a player sat, so rest and injury look the same here. It is one season, and the playoffs are left out. I want to run the same count on 2026-27 once half of that season has been played.
The working
- Season
- The 2025-26 NBA regular season: 1,230 games, 21 October 2025 to 12 April 2026, every club's 82. The NBA Cup final (16 December 2025) is left out, since it does not count in regular-season stats; the play-in and playoffs are left out too.
- Rest
- Days since the team's previous game of any kind, on US Eastern dates, which is the date the feed records for every game. The second night of a back-to-back is none. A team's first game has no rest and is not in figure 1. The team is the one the player played for that night, so a traded player's rest follows the club.
- A game
- A box-score row with minutes recorded and above zero.
- Players
- 366 players with 40+ regular-season games; the head-to-head uses the 364 of them with 5+ second nights. One person across clubs.
- Against own average
- Each game's points minus the player's regular-season average. Derived.
- Points a minute
- Each player's points divided by minutes, averaged across players. Derived.
- Who played
- For each player's time at a club, the team's games from that player's first appearance to the last, and whether the player took the court. 20-point scorers: 40 players who averaged 20+.
