Why?
When Bryce Cotton packed up for Adelaide, plenty of people reckoned Perth were cooked. 5 games into 2026-27, Perth are 4-1 and the top scorer is a guard who scored 7.1 a game beside Cotton two seasons ago. So I counted every Elijah Pepper game since joining Perth.

2024-257.1 a game, beside Cotton

Pepper's increased role
Pepper's points a game went 7.1, 10.5, then . Part of that is the minutes: 15.9 a game in 2024-25, now. But per 36 minutes, Pepper scored 16.1 and 15.3 in the first two seasons, and 25.3 now. The minutes went up, and so did what Pepper does with them.

Pepper has never scored more than 25 in an NBL game. The first 25 came on 22 Jan 2026; the other four are the last four games. One was the 98-97 win over Cotton's Adelaide on 24 Sep, decided by Pepper's three with 1.9 seconds left, on the night Cotton scored 34 in a 300th NBL game.

Perth without Cotton
In 2024-25, Cotton scored 28.1 a game and Perth went 20-13. In 2025-26, with Cotton at Adelaide, Perth went 22-15, with nobody above 17.3 a game. Perth won just as often without Cotton; Adelaide went from 14-17 to 27-14 with Cotton. Flip Figure 4 through the seasons: one scorer, then a committee, then Pepper on top.

Too big to fill?
In 8 games against Sydney, Pepper has never scored more than , averaging 10.4, and Perth won 2 of them. Perth play at Sydney on 17 Oct, a game that had not been played when these numbers were read. Drag the line in Figure 1 down to 18.5 and the Sydney count reads 0 of 8.
Five games is not a career. Pepper has 5 games at 23.8; Cotton averaged at least 22.7 in every season since 2020-21. And hot starts usually cool: that is what every NBL player-season since 2020-21 showed in Five NBL games in. The numbers can't yet say whether this is the next Cotton or a hot start. I'll count Pepper's games again after the Sydney game, and again at the halfway mark of the season.
